United Nations (UN) Women is cooperating closely with the Ministry of Justice and Community Services (MoJCS) to facilitate recovery initiatives for women and girls, deploying highly skilled personnel in disaster management and resilience to ensure prompt interventions.

This collaboration includes providing both technical and financial support to enhance the Ministry’s capabilities.

The primary beneficiaries of these efforts are women and girls, particularly those at increased risk of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) or encountering obstacles in accessing recovery resources. Other beneficiaries include women market vendors reliant on marketplaces for their livelihoods, vulnerable populations such as individuals with disabilities and the elderly, as well as faith-based communities engaged through the Vanuatu Christian Council (VCC) to foster inclusive recovery initiatives.

Relief efforts encompass temporary market facilities, including tents equipped with safe drinking water and sanitation amenities for market vendors, developed in partnership with local authorities.

Community-based GBV services, which include prevention messaging, psychosocial support, and referral pathways, are delivered through local partners. Gender-responsive assessments ensure that coordinated humanitarian actions are guided by disaggregated data. Capacity-building programs further equip faith leaders and local partners to enhance community resilience and promote gender equality in the recovery process.

Central to these initiatives is the focus on livelihood and economic recovery, exemplified by the Markets for Change (M4C) programme, which is executed in partnership with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government of Australia. This programme aids women market vendors in their recovery efforts. Key activities involve evaluating the immediate needs of market vendors, creating temporary safe market environments with access to clean water and sanitation, and working alongside local authorities to formulate sustainable recovery strategies.

Additionally, through its collaboration with the Vanuatu Christian Council (VCC), UN Women offers training for faith leaders, advocates for positive gender norms, and disseminates messages aimed at preventing GBV while providing referral services.
