vanuatu-anti-corruption-help-desk-to-reopen-in-march-2024

Advocacy & Legal Advice Centre (ALAC), the Legal Section of Transparency International Vanuatu (TIV) organisation will re-open its doors after 1st of March 2024.

“We wish to inform everyone who seek free legal advice in alleged corruption related cases that the Vanuatu Anti-Corruption Help Desk, will reopen in Transparency International Vanuatu in March 2024, only two months away,” TIV confirmed yesterday.

Formerly this Desk was the Advocacy Legal Advice Centre (ALAC). It was a component of Transparency International Vanuatu, which was located on the first floor of Caillard Kaddour Offices.

While it was most sought after, ALAC was opened in 2009 and closed its office due to financial constraints in 2014.

Despite its termination of service, potential clients continued to seek assistance from TIV, through its Legal Officer, but had to be advised to consider seeking legal services elsewhere with private legal practices.

TIV is funded by Transparency International Headquarters in Berlin, Germany.

In the latest development, Regional Coordinator of Transparency International, Ms Losana Tuivariravi of Fiji and Transparency International Secretariat Consultant, Miss Crystal Johnson, are going to visit TIV on March 22. During this high level visit the ALAC set up and sustainability will be discussed along with the TIV Project for the next five (5) years.

This visit is important, very helpful and most welcomed by the TIV Staff, organisation and the TIV Board Chairman, Mr. Joe Higgs Kalo. The TIV Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Dr Willie Tokon, stated that this visit is of a significantly high importance for the Vanuatu Chapter and its development.

The Chairman assured the CEO and his staff that his Board is looking forward to the day when the former ALAC Office is reopening its door under its Vanuatu Anti-Corruption Help Desk, to provide a free legal service in corruption cases. The free legal service is most sought after by those who are not in a position to pay for the service. The office is manned by professional legal counsels.
