Registered voters from the provinces of TAFEA, SHEFA, PENAMA, and MALAMPA, including Santo Ward and Port Vila’s Freshwota/Tassiriki Ward, are heading to the polls today to elect new councillors.

Nearly 300 polling stations will open at 7:30am to allow voters to cast their ballots, with over 200 ballot boxes already delivered to designated locations. Today has been declared a public holiday in the four provinces and two municipality wards to enable voters to take part in the election.

The Principal Electoral Officer (PEO), Guilain Malessas, said two polling stations have been set up at Ex-FOL and Freshwota School to accommodate the high population in the area and help speed up the voting process.

The PEO encouraged all eligible voters to visit polling stations today and reminded them not to forget their national ID cards.

“To all citizens aged 18 and above, this election is important,” he said. “Every voice counts and contributes to shaping the future of our communities and the country as a whole. This is your opportunity to be heard. Your vote is your power, and your participation will help build a better tomorrow. Vote today and be part of the change.”

He said the Electoral Office has worked hard to ensure that no citizen misses the chance to vote.

“We understand there may be challenges, such as issues with ID cards or names not appearing correctly on the electoral roll,” said PEO Malessas. “To assist with this, a call centre has been set up where voters can contact us at 23914 if they face any problems during voting.”

Malessas added that any issues reported will be reviewed after the elections to improve future processes and increase transparency, efficiency, and fairness in the electoral system.

Voting will close at 4:30pm today. Counting of votes and unofficial results will begin shortly after. However, it will take several days before the Electoral Commission officially announces the successful candidates.

Of the 263 candidates contesting the election, only 76 will secure seats as councillors in the four provincial councils and two municipalities.
