The Vanuatu Police Force (VPF) and the Vanuatu Mobile Force (VMF) will implement new amended policies and legislation to address increasing incidents of accidents related to alcohol consumption, public disorder, and youth misbehaviour soon.
This initiative was discussed during a comprehensive briefing on security measures in the country, held by Minister Andrew Napuat of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MOIA).
The briefing, attended by both the VPF and VMF, marked Minister Napuat’s first visit to the Police Headquarters and focused on addressing key issues affecting citizens.
Minister Napuat identified several pressing concerns. Firstly, the high number of accidents, many of which are attributed to alcohol consumption, has led to serious injuries and deaths. Secondly, public disorder, particularly disturbances in areas like Feiawa Park and Fatumaru Bay, remains a major issue.
Unemployed youth have also been involved in various community disturbances, including disrespecting leaders and behaving disruptively. The three issues raised by the Minister have been a concern for many citizens.
Increased alcohol consumption and reckless driving have resulted in numerous deaths over the past few months.
Complaints from the public have prompted the government to take proactive steps to discuss and address these matters.
Public disturbances have particularly affected residents during family outings in public parks, including issues such as intoxication, loud music, and other nuisances caused by unemployed youths.
During the briefing, Minister Napuat stressed the importance of implementing strict measures to tackle these issues, saying, “Regaining authority over our nation and maintaining a police presence are crucial for ensuring a safe and peaceful living environment.”
The Minister announced forthcoming changes to policies and legislation aimed at assisting the government, through the VPF and VMF, in maintaining peace and security.
Minister Napuat is working closely with the VPF and VMF to implement initiatives aimed at resolving these concerns. The MOIA will continue to advocate for changes that will strengthen security in the country.
