Youth Challenge Vanuatu (YCV) and the Port Vila Football Association (PVFA) have partnered to launch an initiative aimed at empowering young people through sports and personal development.

The program is known as Youth Rise Up initiative. Its first phase targets boys aged 10 to 14, with training sessions that began on Wednesday, followed by boys aged 15 to 19.

The sessions are designed not only to develop football skills but also to provide critical life skills aimed at preventing youth from falling into harmful or abusive situations.

The workshops focus on key themes such as safety, happiness, and respect.

“We believe that if respect starts at home, the community and the country as a whole will be exposed to a better living environment,” said YCV facilitators Jeremy Sese and Rocky Mathew.

They emphasized that the program’s goal is to cultivate respect and positive behavior among young people, creating a foundation for safer, more harmonious communities.

The first week of the program attracted nearly 50 participants, with 20 boys attending the first day.

The initiative will run twice weekly for six weeks, combining football training with educational workshops.

PVFA Sports Development Officer, Graham Manses, expressed optimism about the impact of the program.

“The initiative will prove to be impactful on the youth,” Manses said, noting that the challenges faced in working with young people over the past two years have made programs like this essential for their development.

YCV’s involvement aims to support PVFA’s existing youth development efforts while addressing broader social issues such as crime prevention.

“We noticed that PVFA has an active, consistent, and effective youth development program. As part of our mission to support youth, we decided to get involved, integrating theoretical positive awareness alongside sports,” explained Sese and Mathew.

According to Manses, the program offers a refreshing approach, allowing the young participants to actively engage with facilitators.

“In contrast to the usual norms where they don’t listen, this training allowed the youths to interact and listen, which is a great start,” he said.

The next phase of the program will focus on girls, with sessions scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, followed by boys on Wednesday and Thursday.

Youth Rise Up program is run by YCV and is funded by World Vision Vanuatu.

As the program progresses, both YCV and PVFA are confident that the skills and values instilled in participants will help create a brighter future for the young people of Port Vila.
