Splashe Mele Bulls have been crowned champions of the Port Vila Women’s T20 Club Championship.

Due to adverse weather conditions, the grand-final of the champions was abandoned, leaving the Mele Bulls as the top-ranked team, according to the Vanuatu Cricket Association (VCA).

In the first semi-final, the Splashe Mele Bulls squared off against the Paama Sharks. The Sharks struggled from the outset as the Bulls’ bowlers applied relentless pressure. Leimauri Chillia emerged as a game-changer with her disciplined bowling, claiming four wickets and conceding just 11 runs in her four overs. Another key performer was Vicky Mansale, who not only took two wickets but also maintained tight control with her economical bowling. With the Sharks managing only 27 runs in 9 overs, the target set for the Bulls was modest.

In reply, the Splashe Mele Bulls swiftly chased down the target of 28, reaching it in just four overs. Gillian Chilia and Wilma Langa led the charge with assured strokes, with Chilia’s brisk 10 off 8 balls setting an aggressive tone. Langa contributed a steady 12 from 16 deliveries, ensuring the Bulls maintained control throughout the chase. Despite the challenging conditions, their composed partnership guided the team to a 10-wicket victory and secured their place in the final.

In the second semi-final, Ifira Blackbirds faced off against Tafea Cricket Club. Batting first, the Blackbirds faltered early, losing opener Qwenneth Joseph to a sharp delivery from Giselle Lekai for just 3 runs. However, captain Rv Andrew’s valiant innings turned their fortunes around.

Andrew’s impressive 48 off 39 balls became the backbone of the Blackbirds’ innings. Her powerful stroke play and ability to rotate the strike kept the scoreboard ticking, despite limited support from her teammates. Wickets fell regularly as Tafea’s bowlers applied consistent pressure, with Giselle Lekai and Tizianna Lekai each claiming two wickets. The Blackbirds managed to score 72/7 in their 19 overs.

Tafea Cricket Club’s response with the bat was both swift and calculated. Despite losing two early wickets to Leisau Andrew, who claimed three wickets in total, captain Nasimana Navaika guided her team to victory with a steady unbeaten 34 off 36 balls. Her composed approach and aggressive running between the wickets allowed Tafea to recover from a brief wobble and chase down the target with ease, achieving victory in just 10.4 overs. Kalangi Wotu’s quick 4 off a single ball provided valuable support, helping to secure a seven-wicket win and propel Tafea Cricket Club into the final.

The excitement of the semi-finals set the stage for a highly anticipated final between the Splashe Mele Bulls and Tafea Cricket Club. Both teams, brimming with momentum and eager to claim the coveted trophy, were ready for a fiercely contested match. However, the weather had different plans.

VCA explained that according to the tournament regulations, the team that finishes at the top of the points table after the group stage will be awarded the title.
