Several wards of the country’s main referral hospital, Vila Central Hospital (VCH), are in need of repair as a Vatu (VT)50 million budget has been appropriated for their upgrade.

The funds are appropriated in the government’s supplementary budget for this year. It is part of the total VT161, 469,105 approved for the Ministry of Health (MOH).

According to the supplementary description, the VT50 million is specifically for the Children’s Ward, Surgical Ward and Medical Ward based on an assessment and costing done by the Vanuatu Mobile Force (VMF).

Apart from the wards’ repairs, an additional VT20 million is appropriated to renovate and equip the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to minimum standards.  The refurbished unit will have four beds and two-bed isolation wards.

A total of VT30 million is allocated to purchase additional vaccine stocks to increase the immunisation coverage so that children are immunised nationwide.

The Malaria Program will be getting VT10 million supplementary, as well as the SANMA Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) and SHEFA NTD.

The SANMA NTD will be using the money to work towards the elimination of yaws in the province by 2030. This will include activities such as providing free treatment to the general public, strengthen skin disease diagnosis with health workers, providing free skin screen, health education at selected communities.

Additionally, VT10 million is also appropriated for WASH and Infection Prevention and Control.  The ministry will be using the funds to improve the health and well-being of communities, including children, women and vulnerable groups.

The government will provide VT641, 107 for the fourth National Health Research, with the intention to highlight health research conducted in Vanuatu by the MOH, partners, hospitals and provincial health offices.

Furthermore, VT1, 771,000 is provided for the National TB Review Meeting, which will provide feedback on outcomes of each provincial activities, key achievements, common issues and challenges.

The rest of the appropriation will be spent on the Hospital Master Plan Development Phase 1 (VT2, 946,100), Emergency and Disaster Response (VT3,282,000), one Health -Leptospirosis Workshop, Training and Field Sampling (VT1, 729,000) and enhancing entomological information for Aedes vectors (VT2,990,000).
