Vanuatu Women’s Centre (VWC) Coordinator, Tatavola Matas, drew attention to a disturbing and growing form of online abuse, affecting many Ni-Vanuatu women, at the launch of the 16 Days of Activism campaign this week.

Matas said one of the most common and severe cases reported to the VWC involves partners—particularly those living or working overseas—demanding nude photos, videos, or online sexual acts before providing financial support.

“They have noticed that partners who are overseas are asking their partners in Vanuatu to perform sexual activities online through social media before they send them money,” she said.

“This is a form of pre-conditional support—meaning ‘you do this, and then I will do this for you.’ Send me your videos or photos, and then I will send you money.”

Matas added that many partners overseas also control every aspect of the lives of women in Vanuatu.

“They control where their partners go, who they talk to, and everything they do. They swear at them and verbally abuse them if they do not listen,” she said.

In many cases, women are threatened with the exposure of their nude photos or videos if they fail to comply with online demands. Matas said such abuse occurs not only with partners abroad but also within Vanuatu.

“They post negatively about their partners or former partners and create spaces online for others to speak negatively about them,” she said.

While the VWC continues to address traditional, face-to-face forms of violence—such as physical assaults that lead clients to seek help—Matas added that new forms of abuse are rapidly emerging through social media platforms, including Facebook, WhatsApp, and IMO, which are among the most widely used apps in Vanuatu.
