Former coach, Emanuel Vatu

A former women’s football coach has called for changes in the current national team setup, following their elimination from the regional qualifiers earlier this week.

Emanuel Vatu is a former coach of Penama Tigers FC women’s team. He said the national team needs stronger leadership with more experience in women’s football after three straight defeats in the World Cup Qualifiers in Fiji.

The losses resulted in Vanuatu being eliminated from the tournament.

Vatu also raised concerns about the treatment of women’s team coaches at the domestic level, saying their contributions are often overlooked when national or regional competitions arise.

He claimed that in some instances, coaches who work with teams throughout the season are replaced by other officials selected by the Vanuatu Football Federation (VFF) when teams travel to represent the country at regional tournaments.

“Many hardworking coaches guide their teams all the way to qualification, but when it comes time to represent Vanuatu overseas, they are sometimes left behind and replaced,” he said.

According to Vatu, such practices discourage long-term commitment and development in the women’s game.

The former coach said women’s football in Vanuatu has declined in recent years and called for renewed efforts to rebuild the sport.

He urged the federation to introduce stronger rules and development structures to support women’s teams and ensure they are guided by dedicated women’s football coaches.

Mr. Vatu also suggested strengthening the role of women’s development officers in local leagues to improve player participation and performance.

He further argued that relationships between players within the same team can sometimes become a distraction during competitions.

While acknowledging that personal relationships are private matters, he said the focus during tournaments should remain on team performance and results.

Vatu encouraged administrators to develop clear guidelines aimed at maintaining professionalism and focus within teams.

The Daily Post contacted the Vanuatu Football Federation for comment regarding the concerns raised but had not received a response prior to print.
