Celebrate-and-support-vanuatu-widows-day-at-saralana-on-june-28

The Vanuatu Widows Association (VWA) will be hosting a celebration for Widows Day at Saralana in Port Vila on Friday, June 28, 2024, from 8am to 5pm.

International Widows Day is observed annually on June 23rd, as declared by the United Nations (UN). However, since this year, June 23 falls on a Sunday, the VWA has decided to hold the celebration on Friday, June 28th, at Saralana.

The theme for International Widows Day 2024 is “Accelerating the Achievements of Gender Equality,” highlighting the role of widows in driving gender equality and their significant impact on the economy.

The VWA was established in 2012 to celebrate the achievements of widows in Vanuatu, with inspiration from a global initiative led by the UN Secretary-General (SG) at the UN Headquarters in New York.

This worldwide call emphasises the importance of recognising and supporting the contributions of widows in their respective countries.

Despite not having their own facilities, the VWA is grateful for the support from “Friends of Widows,” inspired by the teachings in 1 Timothy 5, which encourage helping those in need.

The VWA invites all widows, their families, friends, and national leaders to join the celebration, which will also feature a Market Day.

Attendees are also welcome to donate gifts or make contributions, which will be acknowledged by the community’s “Mama Widows.”

The honorary presidents, Mrs. Mary Lini and Mrs. Lucy Sandy, along with President Marie Kalkoa, extend a warm invitation to all “Mama Widows” and supporters to join them at Saralana for this significant event.

The VWA emphasises the importance of including widows in the national budget and treating them with the same consideration as other vulnerable groups.

This event honours the resilience and contributions of widows in Vanuatu and around the world.
