(l-r) Chairman of the Electoral Commission Kaltamat and members of the commission Linnes Tarianga and Shem Tema declared the names yesterday

The Electoral Commission yesterday declared the names of eight runners-up from the provincial elections who will fill vacant seats left by councillors who resigned to contest the snap election earlier this year.

Before the declaration, Chairman Edward Kaltamat explained That under the new Electoral Law, a runner-up must secure at least 70% of the total votes received by the former councillor to be eligible to occupy that seat.

If the runner-up fails to meet the threshold, a by-election will be held. In cases where multiple candidates meet the threshold, the one with the highest votes will be declared the winner to fill the vacancy

According to Kaltamat, nine councillors resigned to contest the snap election, three lost their seats for missing three consecutive sittings, and one voluntarily resigned, creating a total of 13 vacancies.

Yeoye Selino Stark was declared as the winning candidate of the Merelava Constituency in the TORBA Provincial Government Council. He replaced Sovan Harry Edmond who resigned to contest the election.

Tamata Tavue Nicholas replaced Varavara Syrialle in the SANMA Provincial Council, who lost his seat by missing three consecutive meetings. The second vacant seat in the council left by Franklin William Ezra who resigned to contest could not be filled as the runner-up did not meet the threshold, so a by-election will be held.

The Malekula Constituency in the MALAMPA Provincial Council has two vacant seats, one due to councillor Steven Warren resigning to contest the election, and the other from Wilford Patunvanu’s voluntary resignation. Natnaur Grem and Malinge Stacky Hahafarelemb are declared the winning runners-up.

Robinson Szallai and Kenneth Tabiguru Gerenbo will occupy the seats left vacant by Mathy Phen Lang and Harry Timas who resigned from the PENAMA Provincial Council to contest the election.

For the TAFEA Provincial Government Council, Nakamsu Jack and Peter Tamaku were declared the winners to fill the vacant seats left by Malcom John Luake and Nasara Tom Willie Nipiko, who lost their seats by missing three consecutive meetings.

The Chairman of the Electoral Commission said five other vacant seats will be filled through by-elections. Kaltamat said the Commission will announce the timelines for the by-elections to the public at a later date.
