The Government of Vanuatu has announced the revival of nursing and other technical training programmes, which will now fall under the administration of the National University of Vanuatu (NUV).

This decision was recently approved by the Council of Ministers (COM), marking a new chapter in strengthening the country’s higher education and technical training systems.

Prime Minister (PM) Jotham Napat confirmed that, in addition to restarting nursing training, other vocational and technical disciplines—such as agriculture and trades—will also be integrated into NUV. A policy paper formalising this move has already been approved, reflecting the government’s aim to build a more unified and accessible national training framework.

The PM said the government is currently awaiting clearance from the Ministry of Education and Training. Once this is received, a directive will be issued to relevant agencies to begin aligning technical institutions under the NUV structure.

“For the first time, the government has created a policy that allows us to consolidate and grow our own national university,” the PM said. “We have already seen the graduation of nearly 400 Ni-Vanuatu students, many of whom are now working in the education sector. This progress shows the potential of our people, and we want to encourage even more Ni-Vanuatu to take up these courses.”

The initiative forms part of the government’s broader plan to improve education and workforce readiness across key sectors. By placing technical education under the National University, the government aims to expand access to quality training, maintain consistent academic standards, and create new pathways for local students to contribute to national development.
