The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) hosted a one-week workshop to prepare couples for the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme, both long-term and short-term, this week.

Around 30 participants attended the workshop at the Vanuatu Christian Council (VCC) premises, which concluded yesterday.

James Joe, a participant, conveyed his satisfaction with the program, noting that although he had previously travelled for three years under the scheme, the workshop provided valuable insights on managing time and money effectively.

“During my last participation, I missed important advice on managing my money and sending it to Vanuatu,” he said.

“This was a big challenge for me, and I’m fortunate to have brought my wife along so that we both could be educated on financial management abroad.”

Mr. Joe attended with his wife, appreciating the program’s focus on maintaining healthy relationships and effective family communication.

Joyan Leo, 39, highlighted the workshop’s significance, noting that despite her previous participation in the schemes, the one-week program offered new insights.

“After this program, I learned how to calculate exchange rates, something I missed during my previous travels,” she said.

Mrs. Leo also mentioned that the workshop helped her distinguish between needs and wants, leading to a clearer understanding of how to save money effectively.

The IOM partnered with World Vision and the Department of Labour (DoL) for this workshop under the United Nations (UN) migration program. During the closing, certificates were handed out to participants who completed the training.

The next workshop is scheduled from the 12th to the 16th of this month.
