Vanuatu-para-athletes-feature-on-ABC's-'That-Pacific-Sports-Show'

The popular ABC television program, That Pacific Sports Show, has recently spotlighted the inspiring stories of two Ni-Vanuatu para-athletes Ken Kahu and Marcelline Moli.

Filmed during a visit to Vanuatu in June 2024, the production team journeyed with javelin thrower Kahu to his home village near Port Resolution in Tanna.

The program delves into the challenges faced by para-athletes, celebrating their resilience, determination, and ability to overcome barriers to represent their nation on the global stage while fostering community acceptance and recognition.

Kahu, who competed as a javelin thrower at the Paris Paralympic Games alongside Vanuatu shot-putter Elie Enoch, shares his personal journey, reflecting on the strength and determination required to succeed as a para-athlete in the Pacific.

Thanking ABC, he shared delight on having been part of the show mentioning that it clarifies and tells the public of the challenges they face in the society and tells the story that everyone is equal.

“I am happy to be part of the program so that people can see the challenges we face every-day. It is not easy being part of a minority group,” he said stating the fact that living back home is not easy.

The feature aligns with the new documentary Tides of Change: Para Athletes of the Pacific, which provides an intimate look at the lives of para-athletes from Fiji, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands.

The film chronicles their training and preparation for international competitions, while also addressing the unique social and cultural challenges they face.

The documentary seeks to challenge stereotypes about disability in the Pacific Islands and promote greater inclusivity in sports and society. By sharing these stories, it hopes to inspire future generations of para-athletes and draw attention to the need for increased support and funding for para-sports in the region.

“This is a celebration of resilience, cultural pride, and the power of perseverance,” said the show’s producers. “These athletes are champions of change, shaping attitudes and creating a more inclusive world.”

This program stands as a testament to the human spirit, offering viewers a poignant reminder of the triumphs possible through determination and community support.
