teachers-strike-to-continue-despite-minister-directive

Members of the Vanuatu Teachers Union (VTU) will not be returning to classes on Monday next week as instructed by the Minister of Education.

In his memorandum issued yesterday, Minister Samson Samsen outlined the Council of Ministers’ (COM) decisions regarding the teachers’ claims and instructed all schools, teachers and students to resume classes next week.

Secretary General (SG) of VTU, Jonathan Yona, said while they respect the minister’s instruction, the minister must also recognise teachers’ human rights

Yona called on all VTU members to maintain their stand until the government makes a first payment from the approved VT4 billion.

He said they have been promised a first payment of over VT800 million.

The SG said they also want to see a payment before returning to classes, to give the teachers an assurance that their claims will be addressed.

“This is because some past decisions have not been implemented.

“For example, a COM decision promised teachers two months’ severance rate dated back to 2017, but they are still waiting for it today,” he said.

This week marks the second week of Term III in the school calendar.

The Daily Post understands that schools have reopened, but full operations are not happening due to the strike since majority of the teachers are unionists.

As of yesterday, the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) has suspended over 200 of them for not complying with instructions to resume classes. It includes principals and those who are members of the VTU National Executive.

A case challenging the legality of the suspensions has been filed in court, and the court has given VTU’s counsel seven days to file submissions.
