uncle-rapes-niece-and-threatens-to-kill-entire-family
Owen Aru has been sentenced to 6 years and 11 months for raping his niece and threatening to kill 5 members of his family.
The verdict was given by Justice Viran Molisa Trief in Luganville, Santo 2nd February 2024 for the charges of sexual intercourse without consent and threats to kill.
Mr Aru was 24 years old at the time of the offence and claimed he was under the influence of alcohol and marijuana.
The court document read: “On 9 November 2023, Mr Aru came home drunk and began threatening his family. He went up to his older sister Mrs Aru, pointed at her forehead and told her that he will go to prison but first he will kill 5 of them and will also burn their houses.”
“He also said that he had not meant to rape her niece but because he was under the influence of alcohol and marijuana. He broke the kitchen building, punched holes into their truck and threw his father’s mobile phone into the water (Charge 3).”
There were no mitigating factors and the starting point for the first charge was 7-years imprisonment.

Upon reducing one-third of the sentence and adding the second charge of 2 years and 7 months, Mr Aru’s final sentence was to be served concurrently and backdated to 10 November 2023, which is 6 years 11 months.
