Vanuatu’s tennis team continues to make waves at the ongoing Pacific Nations Cup in Tafuna, American Samoa.

Placed in Pool C alongside Tahiti, Solomon Islands, and Norfolk, the team has bounced back strongly after an early setback.

Yesterday at the Lion’s Park Tennis Courts, Coaches Andre Jean Pierre and Gregory Jacobe led the men’s singles side to a decisive 2–0 victory over Nauru.

Coach Pierre got Vanuatu off to a solid start, defeating Nauru’s Nigel Itaia in straight sets, 6–2, 6–2.

Jacobe followed up with an impressive performance, overpowering Alonzo Thoma with two dominant sets at 6–0, 6–0, before sealing a third set win.

This emphatic result comes after Vanuatu’s tough 3–0 loss to hosts American Samoa the previous day.

Despite challenging weather conditions, with intermittent downpours affecting play, the team has remained focused.

The women’s side also showed their strength on the court. Rising star Emma Maucotel delivered a standout performance against a strong Tahiti opponent, defeating Tavero Chung 6–3, 6–4.

Maucotel and her coach and doubles partner Lorraine Banimatuku continued their winning form, overcoming the Solomon Islands pair Margaret Leoa Agi and Jen Tahunipue with an impressive 6–1, 6–0 result the day before. Coach Banimatuku acknowledged the impact of the weather but praised her team’s resilience and determination to keep improving.

“The weather has not really been welcoming, but the girls tried their best and we look forward to the next rounds while working on our mistakes,” she said.

The Vanuatu women’s team started their campaign on a high note, winning two singles matches and one doubles match on their opening day.

With such promising performances, Team Vanuatu is determined to keep their momentum going as they progress further in the Pacific Nations Cup.
